Q1
|
In
order to reach the Earth ancient astronauts must have
had very advanced technologies. So why is it that they
eschewed advanced material technology in favour of simple
stone structures? And why did their aircraft belch out
flames and fire - this doesn't sound like very advanced
aeronautics!
|
|
A1
|
My
stock answer to this question used to be that stone
was a readily available raw material which would last
forever; as for the spacecraft I was never too sure
how to answer that - did the gods travel round in old
bangers? Nowadays I admit that these are genuine weaknesses
in the ancient astronaut interpretation of the ancient
legends.

Q2
|
Why
have so few advanced artefacts of the gods been found?
Why no remains of ancient aircraft for example? Why
no heaps of rusted junk?

I
used to wonder whether such things might have been found
but secreted away. And I used to wonder whether components
of ancient machines might have been lost due to being
recycled countless times over the centuries. Nowadays
I have to admit that it is possible these artefacts
never existed. Or, if they did exist, that they were
in fact developed not by ancient astronauts but by a
lost civilisation of terrestrial origin.

Q3
|
In
view of your writings in subsequent books, where do
you now stand on the various theories put forward in
'Gods of the New Millennium'?
|
|
A3
|
In
order to address all such points as fully as possible,
I have posted a detailed Self-Critique
of 'Gods of the New Millennium' on this website.

|
Q4
|
Do
you still believe in ancient astronauts?
|
|
A4
|
I
don't like to 'believe' in anything. I seek knowledge
by looking for evidence one way or the other. Having
now discounted the idea that the legends of the gods
referred to ancient astronauts, I urge a more discriminating
approach which focuses on other, more convincing evidence.
And there are indeed several fields of study which offer
possible support for the extraterrestrial hypothesis.
A position statement, of sorts, appears on this website
under 'Ancient Astronauts'.

Q5
|
In
view of your changes of mind - which amount to quite
a strong retraction of your theories - why don't you
just withdraw 'Gods of the New Millennium' from sale?
By keeping the book available you are opening yourself
up to accusations that you're only interested in making
money out of gullible readers.
|
|
A5
|
If
I was only interested in making money I would never
have changed my mind in the first place - at least not
publicly. As regards withdrawing 'Gods of the New Millennium'
from sale, this is not a simple thing because Hodder
& Stoughton have a legally binding agreement with
me (from 1997) by which they can publish and distribute
the book. And besides, they have a right to make a return
on their investment. In any event, I have not retracted
everything in 'Gods' and there are genuine arguments
in favour of keeping the book on sale - please see my
comments in the New
Foreword to the book.
